Product Notes

Alpha Estate Xinomavro Reserve Vieilles Vignes Single Block Barba Yannis is a premium Greek red wine that is made exclusively from the Xinomavro grape variety that is grown on the Barba Yannis vineyard of Alpha Estate. This wine is carefully crafted using traditional winemaking practices and is aged in oak barrels for two years to achieve its complexity and depth of flavour. It offers intense aromas of black fruit, tobacco, and cedar, and a well-structured palate with firm tannins and balanced acidity. The wine has an elegant finish that leaves a pleasant taste lingering on the palate. It pairs well with grilled meat, stews and hard cheeses.

Tasting Notes

A complex and typical Xinomavro (pronounced Ksee no' ma vro), showing aromas of smoky black fruits, strawberries, dark cherries, liquorice, sundried tomatoes, and delicate spice. Full bodied and structured on the palate, with a rich depth of fruit, concentrated savoury notes and a touch of oak. The velvety tannins lead through to a persistent and aromatic finish.

About the Winery

Alpha Estate

Located in Amyndeon, Florina, in the northwestern part of Greece, the Alpha Estate wine company was established in the year 1997.  Expert viticulturist, Makis Mavridis and experienced oenologist, Angelos Iatridis, founded this company after many years of winemaking experience at different locations across the globe. They realized the winemaking potential of the Amyndeon region; therefore, they wanted to make full use of it by setting up their own company here.

The vineyards, where the grapes are cultivated for the Alpha Estate wines, are located at a height of around 620 to 710m above sea level. The plateaus where the vineyard is located are blessed with good rainfall, dry summers and semi-continental climatic conditions. Therefore, the place is great for cultivating both indigenous and foreign red & white varietals. These include Syrah, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Tannat, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Xinomavro, Mavrodapnhe, Negro Amar0, Montepulciano, Malagouzia and Barbera.

The Alpha Estate winery is located quite close to these vineyards; this ensures that there is not much time wasted in the transportation of the grapes.  Here, natural gravity is used for processing to avoid undue stress on the fruits during winemaking. Also, the winery is built using sophisticated technology and advanced equipment that doesn’t cause any danger to the ecosystem nearby. Oak casks are aged for many months in the neatly designed underground cellars at this winery.

One of the major highlights here is that the winery has a different path to take the tourists to the underground cellars. This way, the oak casks aren’t disturbed at all. The materials used for constructing the interiors and exteriors of the winery are also chosen with great care, to not interfere with the character of the fruits processed inside. The Alpha Estate wines are classified into three ranges – Ultra Premium, Super Premium and Premium. All of these wines are created by paying ultimate respect to nature.
