The Bilbainas Winery, also known as Bodegas Bilbainas has a rich history and tradition to boast about. It was established in 1901 by Santiago de Ugarte. Today, after more than 100 years of history behind it, this winery stands as the oldest in the La Rioja area in Spain. It also has a few other distinctions such as the winery with the largest area of underground cellars (3400 sq. m) and the winery with the largest area of vineyards (250hectares) in the Haro municipality.
The best part of the Bodegas Bilbainas is that it is located very close to the Haro railway station. Therefore, it is easy for producers and consumers to reach to this particular location and transport wine from here to other places. This winery is currently making wines under three ranges – Vina Pomal, Vina Zaco and La Vicalanda. Out of these, Vina Pomal is the flagship wine range of Bilbainas. It is also the most ancient winery in La Rioja. The style and flavour of the wines of this range are quite distinct from the others.
The Vina Zaco and La Vicalanda ranges of wines are relatively new wines that were created after the Bilbainas Winery became the member of the Codorniu Raventos Group in 1997. Some of the popular wines in these ranges are:
Vina Pomal Compromiso – Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Maturana Tinta
Vina Pomal Reserva – 100% Tempranillo
Vina Pomal Seleccion 500 – 85% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha
Vina Zaco Tempranillo – Red wine, 100% Tempranillo
Vina Zaco Albarino – White wine, 100% Albarino
La Vicalanda Reserva – 100% Tempranillo
La Vicalanda Gran Reserva – 100% Tempranillo Regardless of the range of wines it produces, the Bilbainas Winery always strives to achieve the perfect balance between traditional aromas and modern winemaking methods to arrive at a bottle of wine that you can never forget easily.
