About the Winery

Casa Ferreirinha

If you are looking to taste exotic and rare wines from Portugal, you have to get your hands on the Barca Velha. It is considered as one of the rarest wines from the Douro and the most iconic wine to have been created in Portugal. Created by the Casa Ferreirinha name, this rare wine was first produced in 1952. Till now, only 18 vintages of this wine have been produced. This explains the huge price that this wine commands in the global wine market.

The Casa Ferreirinha brand is owned by the largest wine producer in Portugal, Sogrape. There have been many interesting stories about how efficiently Barca Velha was produced in an age that had no electricity and modern means of transport. The best part of this wine is that it maintains the same quality and character whenever it is produced.

Native grape varietals such as Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Cao, grown in the vineyards of Duoro Valley are blended well to produce the highly rare wine of Barca Velha. The best of French oak barrels are used for maturing these wines for about 16 months. The wines are then aged for a minimum of 5 years, before they are released to the market.

The Casa Ferreirinha brand is also famous for producing Reserva Especial. This is also a very rare wine as only 16 vintages have been created so far, ever since the first vintage was created in the year 1960. These wines are produced in the years when the quality of the grapes is not good enough for producing the Barca Velha.

The Casa Ferreirinha was a very small brand when it was established by Bernardo Ferreirinha during the 18th century. However, today, it is one of the most established wine names in Portugal with one of the most iconic wines to its credit.
