Product Notes

Cederberg Five Generations Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich and complex wine with a deep ruby color. It has an intense nose of black currants, black cherries, and ripe plums, with notes of spices, vanilla, and cedar in the background. On the palate, it is full-bodied with a firm tannin structure, balanced by a good acidity and a long, lingering finish. The wine is made from carefully selected grapes from Cederberg’s five-generation vineyard, which is located in the cool-climate region of South Africa. It is aged in French oak barrels for 18 months, which adds complexity and a hint of smokiness to the wine. This is a wine that can be enjoyed now, but will also age well for years to come.

About the Winery

Cederberg

The history of South Africa’s Cederberg Wines dates back to as early as 1893. It was during this time that the Nieuwoudt family moved to the farm area of Dwarsrivier, today known as the Cederberg Private Cellar and Sanddrif Holiday Resort. Though the farm is quite huge, only around 66 hectares are used for cultivation to protect flora and fauna here. Currently, the fifth generation of the Nieuwoudt family manages the Cederberg wine brand, which is regarded as one of the best high-altitude wines from South Africa.

Located along the West Coast of South Africa, the Cederberg region receives very little rainfall every year. In spite of being a coastal region, you will not witness a typical coastal climate here. This place enjoys a cool Mediterranean climate, which plays a huge role in defining the character of the fruits grown here. The Dwarsrivier farm, where the vines are planted, can be found on the foothills of the Sneeuberg Mountains, one of the highest in the Western Cape area. The vineyards of the Cederberg Private Cellar are cultivated at a height of around 950m to 1100m above sea level, making them the tallest in this region.  The mountain slopes and the clay-rich soil is helping in producing some of the best quality of red varietals here.

However, there is an equal amount of white varietals planted here, too, thanks to the diverse soil type. Apart from clay, you will also find sandstone, red slate and decomposed gravel-rich soils here. All of these factors help in growing some excellent grape varietals such as the Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, Merlot and Bukettraube.

The cool and unique climate of this region, along with factors such as a virus-free environment and expert winemaking team are some of the main reasons for the unparalleled quality and flavour of the wines crafted here.
