About Chateau Montgrand-Milon

Chateau Montgrand Milon is a product of Chateau Fonbadet. This is located in Saint Lambert Pauillac, a small village near the Gironde River. The estate has more than 50 years old vines, and some of the most incredible wines, like chateau Montgrand, are born here. The estate creates some of the most affordable and approachable products. Wines from the estate are well balanced and come with silky tannins, lifted finish and great concentrations. The history of the estate dates to the 1700s. Chateau Fonbadet occupies a great terroir between some of the best vintages of Pauillac appellation like Comtesse, Chateaux Pichon Loungueville Baron, Chateau Lynch Bages, Chateau Latour, and Chateau Mouton. The old regime ended in 1789, and this is where Fonbadet vineyard is mentioned in the archives. The current owners are the Peyronie family, with old wine-growing roots.

After 200 years, Pierre Peyronie’s grandfather was a manager at Chateau Rothschild and his wife managed Chateau Mouton Rothschild. In the 1930s, Robert Peyronie started building a vineyard from crus sold at auctions or on the verge of extinction, such as la Tour Du Roch Milon and Fonbadet. The vine acquisitions intensified after World War II, giving the estate some of the best vintages.

When his father died in 1963, Pierre Peyronie vinified the first vintage at the estate. He continued increasing the size of the property by purchasing small plots gradually. Chateau Pauillac was bought in 1971 at an auction with Chateau Haut Pauillac. Presently, Pascale, who is Pierre Peyronie’s daughter and a trained lawyer, has taken over. She combines traditions and modern techniques at the estate.

The terroir sites are located on gravel hilltops with a well-dissected profile and an altitude of 14-22 meters. The soils are great geological components of the terroir in the estate. Domaines Peyronie works at purchasing more plots, and in 2002, 3 hectares were exchanged with Mouton Rothschild to help organise vineyard consolidation. The nature of the colluvial and gravel soils on the estate is identical to Grands Crus Classes.
