About the Winery

Located in the Bordeaux wine region’s Pauillac appellation, Chateau Pontet-Canet is a renowned French winery known for its delectable and high-quality wines. Its history dates back to the time of the early 18th century. The venture started when Jean-François de Pontet, the king’s grand equerry, became Medoc’s governor. He brought together multiple parcels of plots of the Pauillac region.  As time went on, his descendants started adding more vineyards neighbouring the Canet locality. It slowly gave rise to the establishment of Chateau Pontet-Canet. Almost a hundred years later, the 1885 classification included Chateau Pontet-Canet in the list of the elites that practised viticulture in Medoc.

Ten years after the classification in 1885, Heman Cruse, one of the first people to become a merchant in Bordeaux, purchased the plot of land. He constructed new wine cellars, added modern facilities to the estate, and produced wines that made their name worldwide. The Cruse family handled and dealt with the work and operations of the property and the winery. They continued to do so for approximately 110 years. However, the wine fraud scandal of Bordeaux that took place in 1973 forced the land to get put up for sale.

In 1975, Guy Tesseron, a Cognac merchant, became the new owner of Chateau Pontet-Canet. Thus, in the duration or course of two hundred years, the winery came to be under three distinct individuals. Today, Guy, along with his son Alfred Tesseron, manage the winery and the estate.

The terroirs of Chateau Pontet-Canet comprise Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. The total area of the property comes to be 120 hectares. Out of this, 80 hectares remains dedicated to the plantation and harvesting of the grapevines. The vineyards have changed their viticulture practices from convention methods. They now follow biodynamic and organic farming.
