About Cousiño Macul

Cousiño Macul’s history dates back to 1760. However, it was not until the winery’s founder Luis Cousiño obtained the 1000-hectare land of Hacienda Macul in Chile in 1856 that its original tale began. Since then, his winemaking legacy started to acquire a fundamental shape. It gradually grew to the state it is today. In recent times, Cousiño Macul is the only winery with a 19th-century origin that remains under the possession of its founding family.

At the starting stages of the Cousiño Macul’s establishment, it was Luis Cousiño and Isidora Goyenechea who worked tirelessly. They put immense effort to grow the size and outreach of their winery. In addition, they aimed to realise their dream and aspiration of producing and selling their distinct wines. After Luis Cousiño passed away in 1873, Isidora Goyenechea took over the operations and management of Cousiño Macul, handling the family business almost single-handedly. She became one of the first women to manage a business and engage in multiple social works without the support of a man.

Although Isidora Goyenechea left the world in 1898, Cousiño Macul remained as a possession of the Cousiño family. Today, the family’s seventh generation leads and ushers the winery into a path of success and worldwide fame. They follow and respect the mission left behind by their ancestors to produce wines of the highest grade that can deliver the unique character and expression of the Maipo Valley.

The vineyards owned by Cousiño Macul get blessed by and enjoy suitable and beneficial climatic conditions. They support the growth and nourishment of the planted grapevines. In addition, the soil is of a sandy-silky and shallow topsoil type that allow the development of high-quality grapes. They allow the wines of the winery to acquire a rich flavour and aroma with an elegant feel.
