About the Winery

C.V.N.E

Compania Vinicola de Norte de Espana (CVNE), or the Wine Company of Northern Spain is one of the famous Spanish wine labels established in 1879 in the Haro – The Rioja. Founded by two brothers, this company continues to produce high-quality wines and focuses on ageing them properly, though it is run by the founders' 5th generation today.

Though the company's wines started winning many awards at various competitions, it got worldwide recognition when the brand won the Grand Prize at the Antwerp Universal Exhibition in 1894.  There was no looking back for the label, as it continued to lure wine lovers by winning the top prizes at various international exhibitions at Brussels and Paris as well.

The year 1915 brought a revolution in the white wine market of Spain. This was the period when CVNE launched the oldest white wine in Spain – Monopole. This wine is known for its unique dry and fruity taste & pale texture. In the next five years, the company grew enormously, and it launched its Vina Real wines in the market. The grapes for these wines are cultivated in the Sierra de Cantabria vineyards. In 1920, CVNE launched Imperial, which is considered to be one of the greatest ever Spanish wines to date.  Last year, this wine celebrated 100 years of existence.

For Imperial wines, the grapes are cultivated in the 28-hectare vineyard in Villalba, and in some selected plots in Briones and Montalvo regions. Imperial wines are known for their high acidic levels. This is because the soils here are rich in iron, limestone and clay. An interesting fact about this special wine is that it is processed in an autonomous winery, known as the Imperial Winery, which is located inside the CVNE winery. French oak vats are used for storing and ageing these wines.
