Product Notes

Deakin Estate Merlot is a luscious red wine produced in the vineyards of Deakin Estate located in Victoria, Australia. It is made from the Merlot grape variety, which is known for its smooth and velvety texture and rich fruity flavors. The wine is aged to perfection to give it a complex aroma of black cherry, plums, and spice that is distinctively fruity and floral. The palate of Deakin Estate Merlot is soft and supple, with a medium-bodied taste of vanilla, oak, and chocolate. It has an excellent balance of acidity and tannins that makes it an ideal pairing for grilled meats, pasta, and cheese. Enjoy this wine with friends or family for a memorable and satisfying experience.

About the Winery

Deakin Estate

Located near Mildura in the northwestern part of Victoria in Australia, Deakin Estate is a family-owned wine estate that makes terroir-rich wines. The vineyards of this estate are blessed with the abundant flow of the Murray River that defines the geological and climatic conditions.

It was in the 1880s that Alfred Deakin, the former Prime Minister of Australia, allowed and encouraged California’s Chaffey Brothers to transform the barren but high-potential land of the Mildura region into fertile, agricultural land. Thanks to the efforts of Chaffey Brothers and their exceptional farming expertise, this barren land went on to become one of the best agricultural areas of Australia. Apart from grapes, olives, almonds and other citrus fruits were also cultivated here.

This estate came into the hands of a different owner in 1967. It was during this time that the premium-quality of grapes grown here were sold to other winemakers. However, the management committee of the estate wanted to create the group’s own wines. This was why a modern and efficient winery was built here in 1980. Old and new vines were planted in a full-fledged structure here, to create wines that were true reflections of the character of the fruits that were used to create them.

Duxton Group acquired the Deakin Estate’s winery and vineyards in 2020; therefore, there is two range of wines created under this group’s label – Deakin Estate and Deakin Artisan’s Blend Brands.

The Murray Darling region, where the grapes are grown, is one of the largest in Victoria. Almost 80% of the state’s wine exports come from this region. Some of the grapes that are most commonly used to make Deakin Estate’s wines are Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Many new vines of Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Tempranillo, Malbec, Viognier and Vermentino are also planted in this region.
