Product Notes

Monte da Ravasqueira Guarda Rios Tinto is an exceptional wine that embodies the essence and character of the Alentejo region of Portugal. This wine is a blend of traditional grape varieties, including Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional, and Aragonês, carefully selected and hand-picked from the vineyards of the Monte da Ravasqueira estate. The aroma of this wine is dominated by black fruits such as blackberry, black cherry, and plum, while the palate is complex and rich in tannins, with a long and lingering finish. Monte da Ravasqueira Guarda Rios Tinto is a wine that reflects the dedication, expertise, and passion of the winegrowers and winemakers of this estate, resulting in a truly exceptional and unforgettable wine.

About the Winery

Monte da Ravasqueira

Monte da Ravasqueira is a historic property in Portugal, with its owners having rich experience in the field of rearing cattle and raising race-worthy horse breeds. Though D Manuel de Mello, the first owner of this property, purchased this during as early as 1943, it wasn’t until 1998 that the first vineyards were planted in the Alentejo area. It was in 2003 that the family launched its first wine in the market, under the MR label.

Jose Manuel de Mello, son of D Manuel, wanted to make this company a household name in the wine industry of Alentejo. Today, the current generation of the de Mello family has been doing lots of adjustments and changes to the company’s wine portfolio to make its presence felt in the wine scene of Portugal.

The family currently owns 45 hectares under vine in the Alentejo Plains. The highlight of this vineyard is that there are close to 8 diverse soil types and 29 carefully selected plots here. Therefore, it is great for growing quite a few full-bodied grape varietals. The vines are grown at an average height of about 270m above sea level. The Alentejo Plains cover almost one-third of Portugal, and are home to various soil types such as clay, sandy, marble, granite, limestone, shale and more.

Thanks to the hot & dry Mediterranean climate in this area, it is ideal for growing some of the rare & indigenous varietals. The native reds grown here are Aragonez, Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet. Roupeiro, Arinto and Antao Vaz are the native whites grown here. All of these are grown in organized regions along Alentejo. The main regions of the plains where the vines are grown with utmost care & dedication are Borba, Redondo, Reguengos and Evora. These regions are divided based on their climate, soil quality and their ability to create full-bodied & aromatic grapes.
