About Cain Vineyard & Winery

The history of Cain Vineyard & Winery goes back to 1980 when Joyce Cain and Jerry Cain established the winery. The two brothers bought a plot of 550 acres located on Spring Mountain. Before the purchase, the land got utilised for ranching in the early years of the 1870s. Nevertheless, it carried prime soil with an exceptional standard or quality that was beneficial for the growth and maturation of the planted grapevines.

After purchasing the land, Joyce Cain and Jerry Cain cleaned and set up the plot. They made it ready for planting grapevines. They cultivated the vineyards using their five primary grape varieties from Bordeaux. They consisted of Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery derived the inspiration for the Cain Five, its flagship wines, from these five collections of grapes.

Cain Vineyard & Winery took about two years to complete the construction of the winery and its cellars. They produced and released their first vintage wine in 1985. The following year, Nancy Meadlock and Jim Meadlock of the Meadlock family joined the winery to help in further development and outreach of Cain Vineyard & Winery. In 1991, they gained the ownership rights of the estate.

The five distinctive vineyards of Cain Vineyard & Winery remain at an elevation ranging from 1400 to 2100 feet. This altitude provides a beneficial variation in the temperature between night and day, allowing a significant difference between the two. It permits the grapes to mature slowly to acquire a juicy texture with rich and elegant character, aroma, and flavour.

Additionally, the other climatic factors prove advantageous to the growth of the planted grapevines. These include an appropriate amount of rainfall, sunlight exposure, and wind currents. They also ensure that the produced wines are of the highest standard and quality.
