About Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite - Chateau Duhart-Milon

Widespread cultivation of grapes started in the Pauillac district in the early eighteenth century, which was greatly pushed by Lafite owners. Milon wines were a good choice for the Lafite master; at some point, it became the second wine at chateau Lafite. The soil in the area is of high quality. At the time, Marquis Nicolas Alexandre de Segur, often called the wine prince was in charge.

The Duhart widow and Mandavy left the Casteja family 14 hectares between 1830-1840. The Casteja, therefore, had a 40-ha vineyard that they named Duhart Milon. Sieur Duhart was a privateer who settled in the area upon his retirement. The house of the privateer existed into the 50s, and it was the inspiration behind the Duhart Milon wines. Duhart Milon terroir was recognised and ranked fourth in Pauillac in 1855. The estate remained with the Casteja family from mid-19th century to the first part of the twentieth century. Chateau Duhart Milon had grown and was one of the largest estates in Pauillac, with about fifty hectares.

Because of the successive inheritance, the estate was sold in 1937. In a span of 25 years, the property had five different owners, and because of vineyard splits, there was a great decline made worse by the 1956 severe frost. The wine quality from the estate declined a great deal until the Rothschild family bought the property in 1962. at the time, Duhart Milon had 110 hectares, with only 17 of these having vines. When the Rothschild family took over, they conducted major constructions on the vineyard where draining the area, uprooting vines, and replanting was done. Adjacent plots were bought, and the vineyard was reintegrated. The family also installed new vat rooms and cellars. The vineyard saw incredible growth between 1973 to 2001.

Presently, new vines have matured, and the cellar has been renovated. After 40 years of work, Chateau Duhart Milon has been restored. The quality of the wines produced here can be attached to the consistency of the vintages that have been released and the potential that the future holds.
