About Fattoria dei Barbi

The Fattoria dei Barbi is one of the most ancient wine labels in Italy. Though the Colombini family, the owners of this group had a history dating back to the 15th century onwards, the Fattoria dei Barbi cellar was open to the general public during the 1950s only. Today, the younger generations of the Colombini family members manage this cellar, winery and the vineyards. This ancient wine estate of Italy attracts lots of tourists from across the globe, every year.

The group’s wine estate is spread across 306 hectares, and they are located across some of the excellent wine-growing Italian regions of Montalcino and Scansano. The rich history of this place has helped it many awards and recognitions. In 1817, it became the first company in Montalcino to export wine to France.

In the 1960s, this company became the first to export wines to America, England and Japan. During the same time, the estate created a name for itself in the Italian wine market by introducing organic winemaking techniques. During the 1990s and the next decade, this group continued to follow its tradition of creating innovative viticultural techniques. Some of these creative principles included machines for analysing the wine quality and usage of carbon dioxide for cold-fermentation of the red wines.

The Montalcino vineyard covers an area of 66 hectares, whereas the L’Aquilaia dei Barbi vineyard near Scansano covers an area of 28 hectares. This place is mostly used for cultivating the Sangiovese varietal (85%). Over the years, the family has been practicing traditional and modern winemaking methods to create authentic and intense wines. Currently, close to 8lakh bottles of wines are produced every year at the Fattoria dei Barbi. Some of the popular wines here are:

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG – Made from 100% Sangiovese

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva - Made from 100% Sangiovese

Morellino di Scansano DOCG – Made from 85% Sangiovese and 15% Merlot
