About Antinori Badia a Passignano

Antinori Badia a Passignano is a mysterious winery located south of the Tenuta Tignanello estate in Sambuca Val di Pesa town. Based in the Chianti Classico area, it starts with a conflicting history. The year the abbey got founded suffers from the lack of a distinct understanding. In the biography of San Zanobi written by Pietro Aretino, he mentions the founder of the Passignano monastery to be the archbishop of Florence in 395. However, there is no credibility to the statement because the oldest documents of the institution date back to 891.

Nevertheless, in 1049, the property of Badia a Passignano came into the possession of the Vallombrosian order. It was a reformed branch of the individuals called Benedicts who specialized in forestry and viticulture. Since then, the monastery gradually underwent conservation and restoration work. The construction changed the original appearance and structure of the building, turning it into what it is today.

The property owned by Antinori Badia a Passignano extends over 223 hectares. Of this, 65 hectares remains dedicated to the cultivation of vines. Numerous documents, now in the Florence State Archives, state the details of the historical significance of the estate in the region. They mention the Sangiovese vineyards and their relation with the local crops. This fact got established in the world when concrete proof got discovered in 1983. At that time, people found the vitis vinifera plant, which is a thousand years old, surrounding the land of Antinori Badia a Passignano.

In recent times, the 65 hectares of land of the abbey dedicates itself to handling the Sangiovese vines. They thrive at an altitude between 250-300 meters above mean sea level. The plants prefer calcareous soil that the naturally endowed Chianti Classico region can provide. These factors help in producing wines of the highest standard.
