Product Notes

Blank Canvas Element Vineyard's Gimblett Gravels Syrah is a stunning expression of this iconic varietal grown in the renowned Gimblett Gravels wine region of Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. This exceptional wine reflects the unique terroir of the vineyard, showcasing lush aromas of dark berries, black cherries, and violet, along with hints of pepper and spice. The palate is rich and full-bodied, layered with complex flavours of black fruits, dark chocolate, and coffee. The tannins are finely textured and well-structured, delivering a long, lingering finish. This is a wine that speaks to the skill and passion of the winemaker, offering a truly memorable experience for any wine-lover.

Tasting Notes

In the true expression of cool-climate Syrah, this wine exudes freshly cracked black pepper, crushed violets, red and black forest fruits and savoury smoky nuances. It has crunchy acidity which carries the fine-grained tannins and background of spicy, savoury oak. This wine is about fragrance and texture, assisted by the co-fermentation with the Grüner Veltliner skins as well as whole-cluster fermentation. It boasts layers of complexity in flavour and tannins which allows an intriguing long-term ageing potential.

About the Winery

Blank Canvas

Matt Thomson and his partner, Sophie Parker-Thomson created their New Zealand based Blank Canvas premium wine label from fruits sourced from different vineyards. Both of them, with their immense winemaking experience and expertise in the Marlborough Wine region of New Zealand, went on to establish their own name to add some creativity and character to the classic wines. That the wines created by the Blank Canvas Brand are exquisite is no surprise because Matt Thomson is a highly respected winemaker and wine consultant in New Zealand.

Some of the popular wines created by this brand are:

Sauvignon Blanc – This is a classic wine created by this brand and it comes with unique flavours of blackcurrant, guava and passion fruit. The Sauvignon Blanc varietal used for this wine is cultivated in the Wairau Valley.

“Abstract” Sauvignon Blanc – This wine is known for its texture aroma. Blackcurrant and passion fruit flavours along with the mineral-salt texture lend complexity to this wine. Wild yeast is used for fermenting these wines and old French-oak barrels are used for the same.

Riesling – The zesty, sweet wine is known for its lemon and honeysuckle flavours. It contains a very low alcohol content (only around 8%), which is why many people love it. The Riesling grape varietal for this wine is cultivated in the Marlborough Valley of Awatere.

Gruner Veltliner – This wine comes with flavours of mandarin and ripe peach. The fruit comes from the Rapaura region of New Zealand.

Chardonnay – This is undisputedly, the best and most popular wine from the Blank Canvas brand. With golden peach and grapefruit flavours, this wine is known for its amazingly long finish. These Chardonnay grapes are grown in the Omaka Valley.

Pinot Noir – This is a bold wine that comes with a thick cherry and forest berry flavour. The taste of this wine gets more intense and complex as it ages. The Pinot Noir grapes are grown in the Waihopai Valley.
