About Chateau Durfort-Vivens

Chateau Durfort-Vivens is a highly renowned and acclaimed winery located in the appellation and commune of Margaux in the notable wine region of Bordeaux in France. The history and origin of the wine estate date and go back to the 12th century. At that time, the property had been under the ownership and management of the influential and prominent Durfort de Duras family. It continued to be so for about seven centuries. The family also possessed a nearby winery named Château Lamothe, later called Château Margaux.

One of the earliest records of Chateau Durfort-Vivens goes back to when Thomas de Durfort served as the Seigneur de Margaux. It was a dominion that entailed the Château Margaux and Château La Mothe. The winery’s properties and assets remained with the Durfort de Duras family. The first grapevine-plating took place sometime around the 17th century. However, the latter half of the 18th century witnessed a change or transition of ownership. It resulted in the winery named altering from Durfort to its current one, Durfort-Vivens. The ownership change got initiated with the purchase of the property by M. de Vivens in 1824.

In the 20th century, local négociants purchased Chateau Durfort-Vivens. After that, in 1961, the Lurton family that owned Château Margaux bought the winery. It allowed the wines to get produced in the Château Margaux property. Today, Gonzague Lurton is the head of operations at Chateau Durfort-Vivens. He has been in the post since 1992 after taking over his father Lucien’s job.

The vineyards owned by Chateau Durfort-Vivens cover approximately 86.5 acres. They get utilised for planting and cultivating various grape varieties. They include Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Overall, the wines produced from these vines get sold under the Chateau Durfort-Vivens label. Additionally, another wine gets marketed under the Vivens brand.
