About the Winery

Chimney Rock

When Stella and Hack Wilson bought a piece of land on the eastern edge of the Silverado Route in 1980 to construct their home and establish vines, the Chimney Rock started to take shape. Both red and white grapes were planted on the initial 59 acres, and the first batch of wines was created in 1984. The estate was expanded in the early nineties to include the tasting room and the Cape Dutch-inspired winery building. The Terlato family became a shareholder in the winery with the Wilson family in 2000. The remaining 46 acres of land were planted with Cabernet Sauvignon in 2002. Since 2004, when the Terlato family became the sole owners of Chimney Rock, they have had a clear idea of the possibilities of this magnificent estate.

The Terlato family understood that a winemaking infrastructure of matching grade would be needed for the land's world-class vines to produce distinctive wines of great quality. Hence, they utilised all their unique resources towards making a new winery. This modern winemaking facility provides the opportunity to ferment each vineyard block individually. The wine created there has aged in French oak barrels for a long time at the right humidity and temperature, courtesy of the adjacent climate-controlled barrel rooms. This non-intervening approach enables the winemaker to make the most of everything the special Stags Leap soil can provide. The final product provides wines that have a good balance and finish.

The actions of Chimney Rock exhibit the long-term view which is necessary for sustainability. They demonstrate how much they respect their land and environment by adopting solar power to meet their energy needs and by irrigating their vineyards with recycled water for a decade in a row. In addition, planting cover crops within vineyard rows encourages soil growth and replenishes the soil's nutrients, another environmentally friendly practice performed on their end. Their commitment to a sustainable future is evident in all they do, including their integrated pest management plan, which focuses on an ecological, cultural, and organic chemical strategy for pest management that reduces environmental and health hazards.
