Product Notes

Domaine Arretxea Hegoxuri is a fantastic wine made from the heart of the Basque region of France. This red wine is a blend of mostly Tannat and Cabernet Franc, with small amounts of Fer Servadou and Pinenc. The wine is deep in color and has aromas of dark fruit and spices, and is complex on the palate with notes of dark berries, tobacco, and oak. It is full-bodied, yet balanced with a long, smooth finish. This wine is ideal for pairing with hearty, flavorful dishes such as grilled meats, stews, or aged cheeses. Domaine Arretxea Hegoxuri is a rare and exceptional wine that truly showcases the unique terroir of the Basque region.

About the Winery

Domaine Arretxea

Domaine Arretxea is a winery situated among the rolling hills of the Basque region in France. It started as a tiny and family-owned vineyard, but became the leading winery in the locality. This has been attributed to the sustainable organic farming practiced by the vineyard, which has garnered many compliments from interested wine lovers and critics. Visiting Domaine Arretxea will have you appreciate its breathtaking scenery, warm reception, as well as exquisite wines.

Arretxea is one of the traditional small family-owned wineries that are situated in Basque country in France. Founded in 1989, the winery is an initiative of Michel and Thérèse Riouspeyrous who produce quality vineyards that best represent their origin.

The winery initially was just a little affair with about a couple of hundred bottles produced every year. Despite this fact, as the fame of the winery expanded, so did its physical scope. Currently, Domaine Arretxea is a booming vineyard that produces some of the best wines in the whole Basque region.
With time, this winery has been sold several times and yet, the dedication to producing quality wines has persisted. The bottles of Domaine Arretxea contain testimonies to the Riouspeyrous family's devotion to their profession as well as to the soil that they cherish. Domaine Arretxea's range of wines takes you on a journey through the flavors and aromas of the Basque country, from full-bodied earthy reds to refreshing crisp whites.

Domaine Arretxea has been maintaining an environmentally friendly wine-making approach for a long time now. It is an estate-grown and certified organic wine, implying that the vineyard does not use any artificial chemicals or fertiliser during the growing process. The winery does not use artificial pest killers and fertilisers but instead makes use of natural means.
Additionally, the wine is made organically and incorporates biodynamics. Cover cropping, composting, and crop rotations are the ways they see the vineyard as a self-sustaining ecosystem that strives for balance. They also use noninvasive winemaking techniques. In other words, this is how they least disturb nature's way of winemaking.

The vineyards of Domaine Arretxea are situated near the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. They have a standing reputation. Covering, over 13 hectares the winery consists of more than 10 plots.

Within these vineyards various types of grapes are cultivated, including Irleleguy grapes, Tannat, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Manseng. These vineyards occupy hillsides that provide drainage and ample sunlight exposure.

To sum it up Domaine Arretxea is a winery that focuses on practices for producing exceptional wine. Unlike wineries, in the region that overlook organic methods and minimal intervention approaches to winemaking.
