Angus the Bull

Founded in 2003, Angus the Bull is an Australian wine brand created by winemaker Hamish MacGowan under the Aberdeen Wine Company. Rather than operating as a traditional estate with a single vineyard, the winery sources premium fruit from carefully selected vineyards across Central Victoria and Heathcote, enabling consistent quality and a distinctive house style. From its inception, the brand has focused on a simple concept: producing bold, full-bodied red wines that are the ideal partner for premium beef.

MacGowan's inspiration came from an unusually diverse career. After working as a cattle stockman in Australia's Northern Territory, he entered the wine industry in Victoria before gaining international experience with a leading UK wine merchant, a winery in Bordeaux, and another in Moldova. Returning to Australia, he combined his passions for cattle and winemaking to create Angus the Bull, believing that great steak deserves an equally impressive red wine. This philosophy remains central to the brand today.

The flagship wine is Angus the Bull Cabernet Sauvignon, crafted from hand-selected parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon to deliver intense black fruit, dark chocolate, subtle oak and firm, savoury tannins. The portfolio has expanded to include Wee Angus Merlot, BLK+BLU Shiraz Cabernet, and the limited-production Black Angus Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Heathcote. Today, Angus the Bull exports to more than 20 countries and has built an international reputation for approachable, food-friendly wines that consistently showcase the richness and character of Victoria's premium grape-growing regions.
