About Astrolabe
Founded in 1996 by husband-and-wife team Simon Waghorn and Jane Forrest-Waghorn, Astrolabe Wines is an independent, family-owned winery based in Marlborough, New Zealand. Named after the French exploration ship L’Astrolabe, which charted the Marlborough coastline in 1827, the estate has established an outstanding reputation for producing elegant, expressive wines that capture the remarkable diversity of the region's terroir.
Simon Waghorn, one of New Zealand's most respected winemakers, brings over four decades of experience to the business. Renowned for his exceptional Sauvignon Blanc, Simon has been instrumental in championing the distinctive characteristics of Marlborough's individual subregions. Today, the winery remains firmly in family hands, with daughter Libby Waghorn Levett serving as General Manager and her sister Arabella involved in the business. Simon also works alongside winemaker Hamish Clark.
Astrolabe sources fruit from carefully selected vineyards across the Wairau Valley, Awatere Valley, Southern Valleys and Kekerengu Coast, maintaining longstanding relationships with local growers committed to sustainable viticulture. The family's own Farm Vineyard in Grovetown provides an additional source of premium fruit.
While Sauvignon Blanc remains the flagship variety, Astrolabe produces an impressive portfolio including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Albariño, Chenin Blanc and Syrah. Its wines range from classic Marlborough expressions to distinctive single-vineyard and subregional bottlings.
Combining meticulous vineyard selection, thoughtful winemaking and a strong family philosophy, Astrolabe continues to showcase the purity, complexity and exceptional quality of New Zealand's Marlborough wine region.
