About Balfour
Balfour Winery is one of the leading names in modern English wine, producing an extensive range of sparkling and still wines from its home at Hush Heath Estate near Staplehurst in Kent. Surrounded by vineyards, ancient woodland and apple orchards, the estate has played an important role in demonstrating the quality and diversity possible in England’s increasingly dynamic wine industry.
The story began in 2002, when Richard and Leslie Balfour-Lynn planted their first vineyards at Hush Heath. Their original ambition was remarkably focused: to create a world-class English rosé sparkling wine. The resulting Balfour Brut Rosé quickly established the estate’s reputation and became its signature wine. Over the following two decades, Balfour expanded significantly, developing additional vineyards and a modern winery while broadening production beyond traditional-method sparkling wine.
Today the estate works with more than 160 hectares of vineyards, both at Hush Heath and across other carefully selected sites in Kent. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier form the backbone of its sparkling wines, while varieties including Bacchus are important to the still-wine portfolio. Kent’s relatively warm, dry climate, combined with varied clay, sandstone and limestone-influenced soils, allows Balfour to explore a broad range of wine styles.
The portfolio is headed by the Balfour range, including Brut Rosé, Leslie’s Reserve and single-vineyard and vintage expressions. The estate also produces still wines under collections such as Skye’s English Chardonnay and Luke’s Pinot Noir.
Balfour combines precision-led winemaking with a strong focus on sustainable viticulture and biodiversity. Its wines are characterised by vibrant acidity, pure fruit and distinctly English freshness, ranging from elegant traditional-method sparkling wines to increasingly ambitious still Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
