About Beaulieu Vineyard

Nestled in the heart of Rutherford, Napa Valley, Beaulieu Vineyard (BV) is one of California’s most historic and influential wineries. It was founded in 1900 by French immigrant Georges de Latour and his wife, Fernande, who named it after Fernande’s delighted remark on seeing the land: “Quel beau lieu!”—“What a beautiful place.”

From the beginning, de Latour shaped the future of Napa winemaking. He introduced phylloxera-resistant rootstock at a time when the pest devastated vineyards, and during Prohibition he kept the winery alive by producing sacramental wine for churches across the country. In 1938, he hired legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff, who brought European expertise and pioneering techniques such as French oak barrel aging and malolactic fermentation. Under his guidance, the Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon became one of Napa Valley’s first iconic wines, setting a standard for quality that continues today.

Ownership of BV has passed through several hands, including Heublein, RJR Nabisco, Diageo, and, since 2016, Treasury Wine Estates. Through all these changes, the winery has remained committed to crafting expressive Rutherford Cabernets and honoring its heritage. Today, Beaulieu Vineyard stands as a true Napa Valley institution, blending over a century of tradition with modern winemaking innovation.
