About Castello Banfi
Castello Banfi is one of Tuscany’s most prominent wineries, located near the hilltop town of Montalcino in southern Tuscany. The estate spans thousands of hectares, combining vineyards, olive groves, and woodland in a region famed for producing Brunello di Montalcino.
The winery was founded in 1978 by the Mariani family, owners of the American wine company Banfi Vintners. Brothers John Mariani and Harry Mariani established the estate with a vision to elevate the quality and international reputation of Brunello wines. They invested heavily in research, clonal selection, and modern winemaking techniques, helping to transform Montalcino into a global wine destination.
Castello Banfi is best known for its Brunello di Montalcino, made primarily from Sangiovese grapes, often showing rich fruit, structure, and aging potential. The winery also produces Rosso di Montalcino, Super Tuscan blends, and white wines, along with sparkling wines under the Banfi name. Their portfolio balances tradition with innovation, combining local grape varieties with international ones.
Today, Castello Banfi remains family-owned and is recognised for its large-scale yet quality-focused production, as well as its role in advancing Tuscan winemaking on the world stage.
