About Castello di Meleto

Castello di Meleto is a historic winery and estate located near Gaiole in Chianti, in the heart of the Chianti Classico region of Tuscany. The estate dates back to the 11th century, when it was owned by the Benedictine monks of the Badia a Coltibuono. Over the centuries, it became a fortified castle and later the residence of noble families, notably the Ricasoli family, one of the most influential names in Chianti’s history.

Today, Castello di Meleto is owned by a group of shareholders under the Viticola Toscana consortium, which took stewardship in the 1960s with the goal of restoring the castle and revitalizing its vineyards. The property encompasses over 1,000 hectares, with about 160 hectares planted to vines situated on rolling hills between 300 and 500 meters above sea level—ideal for Sangiovese, the cornerstone of Chianti Classico wines.

The winery produces a range of traditional and modern expressions, including Chianti Classico, Riserva, and limited single-vineyard selections. Castello di Meleto’s wines are known for their balance, freshness, and elegant structure, combining ripe fruit with the signature minerality of the region’s galestro and alberese soils. Blending centuries of history with forward-looking winemaking, Castello di Meleto remains a quintessential expression of Tuscan heritage.
