About Château Montrose
Château Montrose is a renowned Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) estate located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux’s Left Bank. The château is known for producing powerful, long-lived red wines that exemplify the structure and depth of the region. Montrose was classified in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification and has remained a benchmark for Saint-Estèphe ever since.
The estate's origins trace back to 1815, when the land—originally covered in heath and called "La Lande de l'Escargeon"—was transformed into a vineyard by Étienne Théodore Dumoulin. The château takes its name from the pink heather ("mont rose") that once covered the hills. After passing through several hands, it was acquired in 2006 by Martin and Olivier Bouygues, French industrialists and owners of the Bouygues Group.
Since the acquisition, the Bouygues brothers have invested heavily in sustainability, precision viticulture, and renovation of both the winery and the château itself. Under their ownership, Montrose has reaffirmed its place among Bordeaux’s elite.
Château Montrose lies near the Gironde estuary, benefiting from its moderating influence. The estate spans approximately 95 hectares, planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It also produces a second wine, La Dame de Montrose.
