About Chateau Picque Caillou
Château Picque Caillou is a historic wine estate located in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, just outside Bordeaux, in Mérignac. The château was built in the mid-18th century by architect Jean Laclotte, and for many years served as a country residence before falling into decline. In 1947, it was purchased by entrepreneur Étienne Denis. Today, it is owned and run by his granddaughter Isabelle Denis and her husband, Paulin Calvet, who have breathed new life into the estate since taking over in 1997.
The vineyard covers around 25 hectares, with about 22 hectares planted to red varieties—mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot—and 3 hectares dedicated to white grapes like Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. The estate is known for producing elegant, terroir-driven wines, thanks to its deep gravel soils and the expert guidance of consulting oenologists Denis Dubourdieu and Valérie Lavigne, who began working with the château in 2007.
Surrounded by some of Bordeaux’s top names, including Château Haut-Brion and Château Pape Clément, Picque Caillou stands as one of the few remaining vineyards within the city limits—blending urban history with classic Bordeaux winemaking.
