About Domaine des Roches Neuves
Domaine des Roches Neuves is a renowned biodynamic wine estate located in Varrains, within the Saumur appellation of the Loire Valley, France. The estate was founded in the 19th century, but it gained significant recognition after Thierry Germain took over in 1991. Originally from Bordeaux, Germain brought a meticulous, terroir-focused approach to the domaine. He transitioned the vineyards to organic farming in the late 1990s and fully adopted biodynamics by 2004. His son, Louis Germain, has since joined the estate, helping to continue and expand its legacy.
The domaine spans approximately 28 hectares, with plantings primarily of Cabernet Franc for red wines and Chenin Blanc for whites. The vineyards are split across many small parcels, each with distinct soil types, including clay, limestone, and sandy terroirs. This diversity allows for a precise expression of site in the wines.
Roches Neuves is celebrated for its elegant, pure, and energetic wines. Highlights include the red Saumur-Champigny cuvées like La Marginale, Les Mémoires, and Franc de Pied, each showing depth and finesse. The white wines, especially Clos Romans and L’Échelier, are equally distinctive—vibrant, mineral-driven, and age-worthy expressions of Chenin Blanc. The domaine is considered one of the Loire's benchmarks for biodynamic winemaking.
