About El Esteco
Bodega El Esteco is one of Argentina’s historic wineries, located in the high-altitude Calchaquí Valleys near Cafayate, Salta. Founded in 1892 by the French brothers David and Salvador Michel, with David’s Italian wife Gabriela Torino contributing to its development, the winery was among the earliest producers in the region. It helped put northern Argentine wines, particularly Torrontés, on the international map.
Today, El Esteco is owned by Grupo Peñaflor, a leading Argentine wine group. Under their guidance, the winery has modernized production while preserving its rich history and high-altitude terroir.
El Esteco’s vineyards range from 1,600 to 2,000 meters above sea level, benefiting from strong sunlight, cool nights, and mineral-rich soils that produce distinctive, expressive wines. Its portfolio includes robust Malbecs, structured Cabernet Sauvignon, and aromatic Torrontés, along with premium blends such as Altimus and Chañar Punco, which highlight the unique characteristics of the region. The winery also produces rosés, sparkling wines, and single-vineyard selections from old vines, reflecting a commitment to quality and tradition.
By combining over a century of history with modern viticulture, El Esteco has become a benchmark for high-altitude wines in northern Argentina, celebrated for its elegance, intensity, and connection to the Calchaquí Valleys.
