Emilio Hidalgo

Founded in 1874, Bodegas Emilio Hidalgo is one of the historic names of Jerez de la Frontera, in Andalucía, southern Spain. The bodega remains a family-owned business and is now run by the fifth generation of the Hidalgo family. From its origins as a small family operation, the house has developed an international reputation for producing traditional, long-aged Sherries while maintaining a distinctly independent approach to winemaking.

The winery is located in the historic centre of Jerez, with its cellars built around the traditional solera y criaderas ageing system. Emilio Hidalgo owns vineyards in the Jerez Superior area, where the characteristic white albariza soils provide the ideal conditions for growing Palomino, the principal grape behind the company's dry Sherries. Pedro Ximénez is also used for the production of its intensely sweet dessert wines.

Emilio Hidalgo is particularly renowned for its range of very old and exceptionally complex Sherries. Its portfolio covers the principal traditional styles, including Fino, Amontillado, Palo Cortado, Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez. Among the best-known wines are La Panesa Especial Fino, which spends around 15 years ageing under flor; Villapanés Oloroso Seco, a deeply concentrated mature Oloroso; and Marqués de Rodil Especial Palo Cortado, an exceptionally complex wine from an historic solera. The legendary El Tresillo 1874 Amontillado Viejo comes from a solera established in the year the bodega was founded and represents the pinnacle of the house's long-ageing tradition.

The Hidalgo philosophy is centred on time, traditional cellar practices and meticulous solera management rather than modern intervention. Many of the wines are matured for far longer than the minimum periods required by the Sherry regulations, developing extraordinary layers of dried fruit, roasted nuts, spice, tobacco, leather and rancio while retaining the distinctive freshness and saline character of Jerez.

Today, Emilio Hidalgo remains one of the most compelling independent producers in the region, particularly for collectors seeking mature, characterful and traditionally made Sherry. Its wines demonstrate just how profound and age-worthy the wines of Jerez can become when given decades to evolve in the cellar.
