About Freemark Abbey
Freemark Abbey Winery is one of Napa Valley’s historic estates, with roots dating back to 1886. Located just north of St. Helena, the winery was originally founded by Josephine Tychson, one of the first female winemakers in Napa Valley, before evolving through several ownerships in the early 20th century. The modern identity of Freemark Abbey was established in 1939, when three partners—Charles Freeman, Markquand Foster, and Abbey Ahern—combined their names to create the winery’s distinctive title.
Freemark Abbey gained international recognition in the 1970s, particularly for its Cabernet Sauvignon, which was included in the famed Judgment of Paris tastings, helping to elevate Napa Valley’s global reputation. Over the decades, the estate has built a strong reputation for producing classically styled wines that balance structure, elegance, and age-worthiness.
Today, Freemark Abbey is owned by Jackson Family Wines, a family-run wine company known for its portfolio of premium estates worldwide. The winery sources fruit from a combination of estate vineyards and top sites across Napa Valley, including Rutherford, St. Helena, and Calistoga, allowing for consistent quality and regional expression.
Freemark Abbey remains a benchmark Napa producer, combining historic legacy with modern precision in winemaking.
