About Hambledon Vineyard

Hambledon Vineyard, nestled in the heart of Hampshire’s South Downs, is widely regarded as the birthplace of English wine. Originally founded in 1952 by Major General Sir Guy Salisbury-Jones, it was England’s first commercial vineyard. After a period of decline, it was revived in 1999 by Ian Kellett, who replanted classic Champagne grape varieties—Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier—on the estate’s chalk-rich slopes. In 2023, Hambledon entered a new chapter when it was acquired in a joint venture by Berry Bros. & Rudd and Symington Family Estates, helping expand its vineyard area to around 200 acres.

The winery is dedicated solely to traditional-method English sparkling wine, producing elegant, age-worthy cuvées such as the Classic Cuvée, Première Cuvée, and Blanc de Blancs. All wines are multi-vintage blends, crafted with reserve wines to maintain a consistent house style. The estate boasts the UK’s only gravity-fed winery and extensive chalk cellars, offering visitors a full wine tourism experience—from guided tastings and vineyard tours to fine dining and events. With its combination of rich history, exceptional terroir, and forward-thinking winemaking, Hambledon continues to set the standard for English sparkling wine.
