Kopke

Founded in 1638, Kopke is recognised as the oldest Port wine house, with almost four centuries of history linking Portugal’s Douro Valley with the historic ageing lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia. The story began when Nicolau Kopkë travelled from Hamburg to Portugal in 1636 as Consul General of the Hanseatic League. Just two years later, the first wines were shipped to northern Europe, establishing a business that would become increasingly focused on Port.

A defining moment came in 1781 when the family purchased its first property in the Douro, transforming Kopke from primarily a wine merchant into a significant producer. In 1922, the house acquired Quinta de São Luiz, which remains central to its winemaking today. Situated near Tabuaço on the left bank of the Douro, between Régua and Pinhão, the estate comprises 125 hectares, including approximately 94 hectares of vineyards, with some parcels containing very old vines.

Kopke has become particularly renowned for wood-aged Ports and holds an extraordinary library of mature wines. It is especially associated with Colheita Ports—wines from a single vintage matured for extended periods in oak—as well as aged Tawny and rare aged White Ports. Its extensive portfolio also encompasses Vintage, Late Bottled Vintage, Reserve and Fine Ports.

Alongside Port, the company produces still Douro DOC wines from Quinta de São Luiz, now marketed under the São Luiz name.

Kopke’s identity is defined by time: long maturation, extensive stocks of old wines and centuries of accumulated expertise. Its finest Ports combine remarkable complexity, freshness and concentration, making the house an enduring reference point for traditional, long-aged expressions of the Douro.
