About Otronia

‘Extreme winemaking’ is at the heart of Otronia, the southernmost wine project in the world. Driven by Alejandro Bulgheroni’s ambition to craft world-class, cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the estate embraces conditions that most would avoid. Winemaker Juan Pablo Murgia describes the experience as “a constant learning process,” entirely different from Mendoza — yet this spirit of experimentation and perseverance is what makes Otronia one of Argentina’s most distinctive producers.

Located at 45.33°S in Chubut, the vineyards sit beside Lake Musters, in a landscape once known as Otron by indigenous communities. The climate is unforgiving: minimal rainfall, year-round frost risk, icy temperatures and fierce winds that can exceed 110 km/h. Nets, windbreaks and thousands of newly planted trees help protect the vines. Paradoxically, these harsh conditions create remarkably elegant wines with vivid acidity, aromatic precision and a strong sense of place.

Planted in 2010, Otronia’s 50 hectares of organic vineyards form a patchwork of small plots matched to soil and microclimate. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Torrontés, Riesling, Merlot and Malbec are all cultivated. In the cellar, Murgia — supported by renowned consultant Alberto Antonini — follows a gentle, minimalist philosophy using concrete eggs and neutral French oak.

The ‘45 Rugientes’ range celebrates the estate’s latitude and roaring winds, offering a textured Corte de Blancas blend and an elegant, finely structured Pinot Noir. The flagship Otronia Chardonnay and Pinot Noir come from the best blocks, showcasing purity, tension and outstanding finesse.
