About Pewsey Vale

Pewsey Vale Vineyard is one of Australia’s most celebrated names in Riesling, with a history that stretches back to 1847. It was founded by Englishman Joseph Gilbert, who named it after his hometown in the Vale of Pewsey, Wiltshire. This was the first vineyard planted in the Eden Valley, setting the stage for the region’s reputation as a cool-climate wine powerhouse.

After a period of decline in the early 20th century, the site was revived in 1961 by Geoffrey Angas Parsons and his friend Wyndham Hill-Smith, who replanted vines using cuttings from the original stock. The Hill-Smith family, owners of the Yalumba Wine Company, took over the property in 1970 and have cared for it ever since.

Perched 450–500 metres above sea level, the vineyard’s altitude, rocky soils, and cool climate create ideal conditions for Riesling. Pewsey Vale focuses exclusively on this grape, producing wines that range from the fresh, citrus-driven Estate Riesling to the age-worthy “The Contours” and the rare 1961 Block bottling.

Under the guidance of winemaker Louisa Rose, Pewsey Vale continues to produce Rieslings of purity, elegance, and remarkable longevity—wines that capture both the heritage of the land and the character of each vintage.
