About Philip Shaw
A pioneer of cool-climate Australian winemaking, Philip Shaw Wines has helped establish Orange, New South Wales, as one of the country’s most exciting high-altitude wine regions. Founded by celebrated winemaker Philip Shaw, the estate is located in the picturesque Koomooloo vineyard, near the town of Orange, on the slopes of Mount Canobolas.
Philip Shaw enjoyed a distinguished career spanning several decades, including senior winemaking roles at major Australian producers, before pursuing his ambition to create wines from an exceptional vineyard site. In 1988, he purchased land at Koomooloo, planting the first vines in 1989. The vineyard sits at approximately 900 metres above sea level, where cool temperatures, volcanic soils and significant diurnal temperature variation encourage slow ripening, aromatic complexity and natural acidity.
The winery developed a reputation for elegant, site-driven wines that challenged Australia's traditional emphasis on warmer-climate styles. Philip's sons, Damian and Daniel Shaw, subsequently became involved in the family business, helping develop its commercial identity and winemaking operations.
The portfolio encompasses both red and white varieties, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. The estate is particularly recognised for its numbered wines, including No. 11 Chardonnay, No. 17 Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec, and No. 89 Shiraz, alongside the approachable The Wire Walker range.
Philip Shaw's wines are characterised by freshness, balance and restrained elegance, combining ripe fruit with fine structure and a clear expression of Orange's distinctive cool-climate terroir.
