About Proprietà Sperino

Proprietà Sperino is a small, high-altitude estate in Lessona, northern Piedmont (Alto Piemonte), owned by the De Marchi family, proprietors of the legendary Chianti Classico estate Isole e Olena.

In 1999 Paolo De Marchi, searching for the historic Nebbiolo terroir his great-grandfather had owned before phylloxera, discovered the abandoned Sperino vineyards and 18th-century cellar in Lessona. He and his son Luca began a meticulous restoration: replanting on original rootstocks, recovering old vines, and rebuilding the cascading vineyards on sandy marine soils and volcanic porphyry at 300–420 m altitude. The first commercial vintage was 2007.

The estate covers 11 hectares (8 planted), focused almost exclusively on Nebbiolo, with tiny amounts of Vespolino (a local clone of Uva Rara). The flagship wine is Lessona DOC “Uvaggio” – pure, perfumed, elegantly structured Nebbiolo that combines alpine freshness, fine tannins and remarkable longevity, often compared to Barolo but in a lighter, more filigree style. A second wine, “Rosa del Rosa” (from younger vines), is released as Vino Rosso. Production is tiny: around 25,000 bottles annually.

Run today by Luca De Marchi with his father as consultant, Proprietà Sperino has rapidly become one of Alto Piemonte’s benchmark producers, reviving the historic prestige of Lessona with wines of transparency, finesse and mountain energy.
