About R. López de Heredia

R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is a legendary family-owned winery located in Haro, in the Rioja Alta region of Spain. Founded in 1877 by Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, it has been passed down through generations and is still run by his descendants today. The winery is known for its deep respect for tradition and patience in winemaking.

The estate’s most famous vineyard, Viña Tondonia, was planted between 1913 and 1914 on rich alluvial and limestone soils along the Ebro River. Alongside other vineyards like Viña Bosconia and Viña Cubillo, it provides the grapes for their iconic wines.

López de Heredia sticks to classic methods: fermenting in large old oak vats and aging wines in small American oak barrels, some of which have been in use for over a century. Their wines are bottled without filtration and often spend many years aging before release—sometimes six years or more.

They produce a range of wines including reds, whites, and rosés, but their Gran Reservas are the real stars. Made only in exceptional years, these wines are celebrated for their elegance, complexity, and incredible aging potential. Today, Viña Tondonia remains a symbol of traditional Rioja winemaking at its finest.
