Recaredo

Recaredo is one of Spain’s most respected producers of traditional-method sparkling wine, based in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia in the heart of the Penedès, just southwest of Barcelona. A family-owned winery with a history stretching back to 1924, it was founded by Josep Mata Capellades, who began his career as a professional bottle disgorgement specialist before building a cellar beneath his family home. Three generations later, the Mata family continues to oversee the estate, with the winery now firmly associated with some of the finest long-aged sparkling wines in Catalonia.

Recaredo's philosophy is centred on terroir, time and minimal intervention. The family owns approximately 100 hectares of vineyards within the Corpinnat territory, characterised largely by calcareous soils and a Mediterranean climate. The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically, dry-farmed and harvested entirely by hand. Xarel·lo is the principal variety, supported by other traditional Penedès grapes including Macabeu, Parellada, Garnatxa and Monastrell.

The winery became a pioneer of Brut Nature sparkling wines and has developed an uncompromising approach to quality. Since 2010, Recaredo has used only grapes from its own vineyards, while all wines are vinified and aged at the family estate. Since 2020, indigenous yeasts from the vineyards have been used for both primary and secondary fermentation. The wines undergo their second fermentation in bottle and are aged for a minimum of 30 months, often considerably longer, under natural cork. Riddling and disgorgement are still performed by hand.

The range includes Terrers, a multi-vineyard expression of the estate, alongside Serral del Vell, Reserva Particular, Subtil, Turó d’en Mota and Intens Rosat. Turó d’en Mota, made exclusively from Xarel·lo from a single vineyard, is particularly iconic and spends many years ageing on its lees.

In 2018 Recaredo became one of the founding members of Corpinnat, a quality-focused collective dedicated to distinctive sparkling wines from the heart of Penedès. Today, Recaredo stands as a benchmark for authentic, terroir-driven Spanish sparkling wine, combining traditional craftsmanship with exceptionally long ageing and rigorous biodynamic viticulture.
