About Sakkie Mouton
Sakkie Mouton Family Wines is one of South Africa’s exciting new-generation producers, crafting distinctive, small-production wines from the rugged West Coast of the Western Cape. Based in Vredendal, the winery focuses on old-vine vineyards around Koekenaap and the coastal settlements of the Olifants River region, where sandy soils, cooling Atlantic influences and challenging growing conditions create wines of remarkable character.
Founded by young winemaker Sakkie Mouton, the project reflects a deeply personal connection to the landscape in which he grew up. Coming from a farming family, Mouton developed an appreciation for the region’s overlooked vineyards and their potential to produce exceptional wines. After gaining winemaking experience elsewhere in South Africa, he launched his own label, determined to showcase the distinctive qualities of the West Coast rather than follow established regional styles.
The winery specialises in Chenin Blanc, alongside varieties such as Colombard and Palomino, sourced from carefully selected old bush-vine vineyards. Its best-known wines include Revenge of the Crayfish Chenin Blanc, Full on Misfit Blanc and Dawn of the Salty Tongues, each expressing a different aspect of the region’s coastal terroir.
Mouton follows a minimal-intervention philosophy, using spontaneous fermentation, gentle handling and restrained oak influence to preserve vineyard character. The resulting wines are vibrant, textured and intensely mineral, often displaying citrus, orchard fruit and distinctive saline notes.
With limited production and a growing international reputation, Sakkie Mouton is helping redefine the potential of South Africa’s lesser-known coastal vineyards.
