About Seifried Estate
One of Nelson’s pioneering wineries, Seifried Estate has played a defining role in establishing New Zealand’s South Island as a serious wine-producing region. Founded in 1973 by Austrian-born winemaker Hermann Seifried and his New Zealand-born wife Agnes, the estate remains proudly family-owned, combining more than five decades of experience with a commitment to quality, innovation and regional character.
The story began when Hermann and Agnes planted their first vineyard in the Moutere Valley, becoming among the earliest commercial winegrowers in Nelson. Despite initial scepticism about the region’s suitability for viticulture, their determination helped demonstrate its potential. Over the following decades, the family expanded its vineyard holdings and established Seifried as one of Nelson’s most respected producers.
Today, the winery is run by the second generation, with siblings Chris, Heidi and Anna Seifried actively involved in the business. The family farms vineyards across Nelson’s distinctive growing areas, including the Moutere Hills and Waimea Plains, where abundant sunshine, cooling maritime influences and varied soils create ideal conditions for aromatic, balanced wines.
Seifried produces an extensive range of varieties, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Grüner Veltliner and Pinot Noir. Its portfolio includes the flagship Seifried Estate wines, the approachable Old Coach Road range and the internationally acclaimed Sweet Agnes Riesling, named after the estate’s co-founder.
Combining traditional European winemaking influences with New Zealand’s vibrant fruit character, Seifried Estate produces expressive, beautifully balanced wines that reflect both its pioneering heritage and the distinctive terroir of Nelson.
