About Tscharke
Located in the heart of the western Barossa Valley at Marananga, Tscharke Wines is a progressive, family-owned estate that combines generations of farming heritage with a modern vision for sustainable viticulture. The Tscharke family has farmed in the Barossa since the mid-1800s, with six generations cultivating vineyards across the region before transitioning from grape growers to estate winemakers. The winery was established by Damien Tscharke, who released the inaugural vintage in 2001 and has since built a reputation as one of Australia's most innovative producers. Today, Damien continues to lead the business, championing regenerative farming, organic and biodynamic viticulture, and minimal-intervention winemaking.
The estate's vineyards are situated on the ancient soils of the Western Ridge, including Stone Well, Gnadenfrei and Greenock Creek, where certified organic and biodynamic practices promote biodiversity and healthy soils. Tscharke has become known for looking beyond traditional Barossa styles, producing elegant, site-driven wines with freshness and balance rather than excessive weight. Fermentation and maturation often utilise concrete eggs, terracotta amphorae and large-format French oak to enhance texture while preserving vineyard character.
While Shiraz and Grenache remain key varieties, Tscharke is equally recognised for pioneering Mediterranean grapes such as Montepulciano, Savagnin, Grenache Blanc, Albariño and Mataro. The range includes vibrant rosé, single-vineyard Grenache and Shiraz, sparkling Blanc de Noirs, and distinctive small-batch wines that reflect both innovation and terroir. Consistently acclaimed by critics, Tscharke has established itself as one of the Barossa Valley's leading contemporary wineries, combining deep family roots with an uncompromising commitment to sustainability and expressive, food-friendly wines.
