Product Notes

Rust en Vrede Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a premium red wine that is known for its exceptional quality and complex flavor profile. Sourced from a single vineyard site in the Stellenbosch region of South Africa, this wine has a deep ruby red color and aromas of dark berries, black currant, and a hint of chocolate. On the palate, it has a rich and intense flavor, with notes of bold tannins, black cherry, and a touch of oak. This wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, resulting in a smooth and elegant finish. Perfect to pair with red meat and stews, Rust en Vrede Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a true delight for wine lovers.

Tasting Notes

This Cabernet Sauvignon shows off 2017’s deep, almost opaque colour. Aromas of rich, concentrated cassis, black cherry and blue berry evolve into more floral and spicy notes of jasmine, juniper and cinnamon. Fine, grippy tannins combine with a vibrant acidity to create a taut, structured wine. Intense black fruit follows though from the nose with flavours of dark chocolate, all spice and a savoury note of tobacco leaf adding to the complexity. The finish is crisp and dry with notes of sweet baking spices.

About the Winery

Rust en Vrede

The origin of Rust en Vrede dates back to March 12th 1694. This is the date mentioned in the official Title Deed of the estate. In 1977, Jannie and Ellen, parents of the current proprietor, Jean Engelbrecht, purchased this estate in 1977, and started work on it right away. In the subsequent year, Jannie created the first vintage from this estate. A few years later, rigorous re-planting of vines took place here, and the team focussed on planting Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon varietals.

This wine estate is located on the low-altitude slopes of the Helderberg Mountains, in the southern region of Stellenbosch, close to False Bay. The wines created from here are full-bodied and intense, thanks to the ancient Tukulu soils and the warm, Mediterranean climate of the region. In 1988, Jannie Engelbrecht gave a new dimension to Rust en Vrede wines, when he blended Syrah grapes with the famous Bordeaux varietals of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

The former South African President, Nelson Mandela, put Rust en Vrede wines on the international map, when he chose this wine to be served at the famous Nobel Peace Prize dinner, held at Oslo in 1993. In 2000, the red wine from this label earned international acclaim, when it was recognized as Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines in the World. Coenie Snyman, who was appointed winemaker at the estate in 2006, was named Wine Club’s winemaker of the year in 2009, adding more laurels to this wine label. The laurels have never stopped, as the wines and the winemakers of this estate have been winning many awards at international platforms consistently.

Today, if the Rust en Vrede estate has earned a name for itself in the global wine industry, it is due to the pride and passion that the proprietor and her experienced winemaking team exhibits in every single bottle they create.
