Sparkling Wine

Sparkling Wine

Sparkling wine is often confused with Champagne. Though both have significant levels of carbon dioxide in it which creates bubbles in them, they are quite different from each other. Champagne is the name given only to that wine, which is produced in the Champagne area of France. We will tell you more about that when we talk about champagnes. You will usually find white or rose wine varieties in sparkling wine; however, in some rare instances, you might also notice red wine being used to make it.

When you buy sparkling wine, you should know how they have been prepared, so that you can enjoy its character better than before. Carbonation, Charmat and Champagne are the three commonly used sparkling wine-making methods. Though the process of creating frizz and bubbles in the wine remains the same, the way it is created is makes these methods widely different from each other.

In the champagne method, the wine is poured into a bottle and mixed with sugar and yeast, which creates bubbles in it. In the Charmat method, the wine is poured into huge-sized vats or tanks, where it mixes with the sugar & yeast to create bubbles.  In the carbonation method, carbon dioxide is directly added to the wine to create bubbles.

Sparkling wines created in the Champagne method contains the most authentic flavours of yeast while those created by the carbonation method have the least amount of yeast flavours in them. This is why you need to buy sparkling wine, only after thoroughly understanding their bubble-creation method. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the two most commonly used types of grapes to make sparkling wines.

When you buy sparkling wine, watch out for the labels. If the label reads as “blanc de noir”, it means that your wine is made from dark-coloured grapes. If it reads as “blanc de blancs”, it is made from light-coloured grapes.
