White Wine

White Wine

While explaining about red wine, we told you that dark-coloured grapes were used for making it. If you thought that white wine was made using white grapes only, you are mistaken. Did you know that dark-coloured and red grapes were used for making white wine? The major difference between red and white wine is that the skins of grape fruits are also fermented while preparing the former, whereas the skins are not used in fermentation when preparing the latter.

When you buy white wine, you may find the details of its source grape fruit from the labels. Many people are loyal to one particular brand and grape, when they buy white wine. However, there are many varieties of grapes that you must try out. 12 varieties of grapes are commonly used for making white wine. They are Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Marsanne, Muscat, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Roussanne, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Viognier and Gruner Veltliner.

The grapes that are used for preparing white wine are first peeled off their skins to extract the juice. Huge vats are used to collect the juice and ferment the same. Sugar and alcohol are two of the most common additives used for fermenting the wine. While fermenting, the wineries use different techniques. When you buy white wine, you would have noticed a smooth & oily with a silky texture on same varieties. These wines have been subjected to an MLF process (Malo-Lactic Fermentation). MLF white wines are expensive, because of the complexity of the process involved in making it.

White wines have higher antioxidant content than red wines. Medical studies have proved that white wine helps in reducing your risk to cholesterol and cardiac ailments. It also helps in achieving weight loss apart from giving you other health benefits such as improved immunity, improved lung-function & bowel movements.
