Lower Austria

Lower Austria

Lower Austria is a wine region located in eastern Austria, known for producing some of the country’s best wines. The region spans across the northern part of the country, and is comprised of five sub-regions that each have their own unique terroir and grape varieties.

The most famous sub-region of Lower Austria is the Wachau valley, which is situated along the Danube River and is home to some of Austria’s most prestigious white wine vineyards. The region’s steep vineyard terraces, which are carved into the rocky hillsides along the river, offer the perfect grape-growing conditions, with ample sunshine, cool breezes, and mineral-rich soil.

The Wachau valley is particularly well-known for its Grüner Veltliner, a dry and versatile white wine with flavors of green apple, citrus, and white pepper. Riesling is another prominent grape in the region, producing crisp and acidic wines with fruity notes of apricot and peach.

Another sub-region of Lower Austria worth mentioning is the Kamptal, which sits to the northeast of the Wachau valley. This area produces both white and red wines, but is best-known for its Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. The wines from Kamptal tend to be softer and more approachable than those from the neighboring Wachau valley.

The wines of Lower Austria have a long history and have been highly prized since the Middle Ages. In fact, the Habsburg royal family even had a vineyard here, which produced wine exclusively for their consumption. Today, the region is still well-regarded for its high-quality and unique wines, and wine tourism is a popular pastime for visitors to the region.

In addition to wine, Lower Austria is also famous for its beautiful countryside, charming villages, and rich history. Visitors can explore the stunning baroque architecture of the towns of Krems and Melk, stroll through the vineyards of the Wachau valley, or sample local specialties like smoked trout or apricot jam. Lower Austria truly offers something for everyone, whether you’re a wine connoisseur, a history buff, or just someone looking for a peaceful and scenic getaway.
