About Alto

Situated on the lower slopes of the Helderberg Mountain in the heart of Stellenbosch, Alto Wine Estate is one of South Africa's most historic and respected red wine producers. The estate's origins date back to 1919 when Hennie Malan established vineyards on the elevated site, with the first vintage produced in 1922.

Alto has earned an exceptional reputation for Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style blends, benefiting from decomposed granite soils, cooling False Bay breezes and north-facing slopes that provide ideal conditions for premium red wine production. Remarkably, the estate has had only five winemakers in more than a century, reflecting its commitment to continuity and tradition. Today, Alto forms part of the DGB (Douglas Green Bellingham) portfolio and is led by winemaker Bertho van der Westhuizen, who succeeded his father, Schalk, in 2015, becoming the second father-and-son winemaking duo in the estate's history. Bertho follows a minimal-intervention philosophy, allowing the distinctive Helderberg terroir to shine through in every wine.

Alto's portfolio is centred on classic red varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with flagship wines such as Alto Rouge, Estate Blend, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and the limited-release M.P.H.S., produced only in exceptional vintages. These structured, age-worthy wines have established Alto as one of Stellenbosch's benchmark estates and a leading name in South African fine wine.
