The wine estate’s story began with the de May family, who came and settled in the country in the Middle Ages. They received an estate in the 16th century by a royal decree, allowing them to use the property to make and produce wines in the 18th century.

The estate and property of Château Certan De May remained under the ownership of the de May family till 1925. After that, the proprietorship passed onto the Barreau family. Today, the wine estate remains surrounded by La Fleur-Pétrus and Vieux Château Certan, enjoying the superior and ideal microclimate of the region. The vineyards owned and managed by Château Certan De May possess a soil combination of gravel and clay. They help bring out the unique elegance and power of the produced wines. It consists of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. A significant portion of the vineyards, almost more than half, get used for the Merlot variety.
