About Domenico Clerico

Domenico Clerico is one of the legendary names of Barolo, a winery that helped shape the modern identity of the region. The estate is based in Monforte d’Alba, in the heart of Piedmont’s Langhe hills, and was founded in the late 1970s when Domenico “Mimmo” Clerico took over a small family farm. Instead of focusing on bulk wine, he set out to express the full potential of Monforte’s vineyards, gradually acquiring parcels in some of the area’s most prized crus, including Ginestra, Pajana, and Mosconi.

Clerico quickly became known as one of the “Barolo Boys,” a group of winemakers who embraced modern techniques—careful vineyard work, lower yields, and barrique aging—to create richer, more polished wines. His style combined intensity with precision, always driven by a deep respect for the vineyards. After Domenico’s passing in 2017, the winery remained in the hands of his family and long-time team, who continue to follow his vision.

The estate specializes in Nebbiolo, producing powerful and age-worthy Barolo bottlings alongside Langhe Nebbiolo and Barbera. Clerico’s wines are admired for their concentration, dark fruit, and structure, yet they retain an elegance and mineral depth that speak clearly of Monforte’s steep, calcareous slopes.
