About F.X. Pichler

F.X. Pichler is one of Austria’s most celebrated wineries, located in the Wachau—a breathtaking stretch of the Danube Valley designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for its dramatic scenery. The Pichler family has cultivated vineyards in the region for five generations. Franz Xaver Pichler established the estate in 1971, and today his son, Lucas Pichler, continues the family’s winemaking legacy. What began as a modest three hectares under Lucas’s grandfather has grown to twenty hectares, and as of 2024 all single-vineyard sites are fully certified organic.

Wachau’s unique growing conditions are shaped by several intersecting influences: the tempering effect of the Danube River, cool air flowing down from the Waldviertel and Dunkelsteiner forests, and warm currents arriving from the Pannonian basin. Together, these elements create ideal conditions for Riesling and Grüner Veltliner to thrive.

In response to changing conditions, including the impact of climate change, F.X. Pichler stepped away from the Vinea Wachau association. The 2020 vintage marked their first release under the DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) system. This transition replaced the traditional Federspiel and Smaragd classifications—based on must weight—with a three-tier hierarchy of regional, village, and single-vineyard wines. Crucially, core quality principles from Vinea Wachau remain intact, including compulsory hand harvesting and a strict ban on chaptalisation.

Among the estate’s most distinctive vineyards is Ried Klostersatz, a relatively flat site near the winery, nestled within a sweeping bend of the Danube between Dürnstein and Oberloiben. Documented as early as 860 AD, the vineyard’s sandy topsoil over gravel and stones encourages slow, even ripening. After four months on lees in stainless steel, its Riesling and Grüner Veltliner show spicy depth, vibrant acidity, layered aromatics, and a finely etched mineral finish.

The Burgstall vineyard enjoys abundant sunlight throughout the day, moderated by steady winds that slow flavour development. Its Riesling, aged six months on lees, combines a richer mouthfeel with piercing acidity and pure lime and peach notes.

Loibenberg, one of the largest single vineyards in the Wachau, is defined by its warm, south-facing exposure and austere primitive rock. The resulting Riesling is powerful and expressive, with ripe peach and apricot character.

At elevations of 230 to 300 metres, Steinertal benefits from cooling forest influences, producing generous yet finely balanced wines with bracing acidity and impressive ageing potential.

At the pinnacle of the estate’s holdings lies Kellerberg, widely regarded as the Wachau’s most prestigious vineyard. Its southeast-facing aspect and pronounced diurnal temperature shifts give rise to wines with exotic aromas of mango, passion fruit, and honey, carried by a steely, precise, and remarkably crisp palate.
