About Iona

Perched high above the picturesque Elgin Valley, Iona Wines is one of South Africa’s leading cool-climate producers, renowned for its elegant, expressive wines that combine purity, freshness and exceptional balance. Located in the Elgin Highlands of the Western Cape, approximately 70 kilometres southeast of Cape Town, the estate benefits from one of the country's coolest wine-growing environments.

The winery's modern history began in 1997, when Andrew Gunn, a former engineer, purchased a neglected apple farm on a remote mountain plateau overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Recognising the area's potential for premium viticulture, he began transforming the property into a vineyard estate. Today, Iona remains family-owned, with Andrew and his wife Rozy Gunn continuing to guide its development.

Situated at elevations of up to 420 metres, Iona's vineyards benefit from cooling maritime breezes, frequent cloud cover and a long, slow growing season. These conditions allow grapes to develop complex flavours while retaining vibrant natural acidity. Sustainable farming, biodiversity and careful vineyard management are central to the estate's philosophy.

Iona is particularly celebrated for its Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, alongside Syrah and carefully crafted red blends. Its portfolio includes the flagship Iona range, the distinctive One Man Band wines and the approachable Sophie te'Blanche Sauvignon Blanc.

Winemaking emphasises minimal intervention, gentle handling and restrained oak influence, allowing the cool-climate terroir to take centre stage. The resulting wines are precise, aromatic and beautifully structured, reflecting Iona's pioneering role in establishing Elgin as a benchmark region for premium South African wine.
